We are truly fully back when the old problems continue to assert themselves. Brexit has assumed a central role again on the political stage, with the usual chaos and parliamentary pantomime evident at Westminster. And yet no one has come up with an alternative to Theresa May’s Brexit plan. There will be a vote next week in the UK parliament, and as the Prime Minister herself has said, who knows what will happen next? It’s really unsettling all round and very difficult for government departments, agencies and so on to make any plans as they are facing into the unknown.

Well, Longford has really emerged with a bang in this pre-Christmas season. We had two notable events in Longford over last weekend.

Insider has been a keen observer of the political scene for well over 40 years, and, up until recently, thought he had seen and heard it all. There were many contenders for the ‘Brass Neck’ award over the years - from Charlie Haughey’s ‘doing the State some service’ to Ray Burke’s ‘line in the sand’ to Bertie Aherne's ‘won it on the horses’.

Well, Ireland won last Saturday in Melbourne so it’s full steam ahead for Sydney next week, now it really is a competition. Australia won one match and Ireland won another match and now, next Saturday, will be the decider.

We have finally jumped from 2017 to 2018 and even though I am compiling this on January 4, it seems as if half the country has not yet gone back to work. There is a general air of ‘let us wait until the children go back to school’, which will be next Monday. So for the moment there is still the remnants of festivities around.

Let us begin this week’s column by talking about the marvellous weekend of sports we had here.

Well! Where do I begin? So much has happened since we last spoke together. In our conversation last week, we talked about Sr Christopher Mary Callan from the Bower Convent in Athlone, Eamonn Casey and others.

Well, here we are in another week and everything in the political world in Ireland is still in turmoil.

What wonderful Christmas weather we have had this year. I know I said it before, but it bears further repetition. Everyone could travel; everyone could go out; everyone could walk or drive wherever they wanted to. It was just marvellous, thank God, and eased the load for so many.

Well I am filled with sadness and I am sure many reading this will feel the same.
